Tsavo Forums

The Tsavo Ecosystem is slowly but surely dying unless something radical is undertaken collectively by a cross section of stakeholders.  Livelihoods of millions of people dependent on the Tsavo ecosystem are under threat with serious consequences such as worsening conditions of hunger, resource driven conflicts and poverty among others. Indeed, lots of efforts by various stakeholders including Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community based organizations (CBOs), environmental scientists and government have already been undertaken. However, most of these noble and well-intended initiatives run in parallel and, consequently, fail to generate synergy necessary for significant impact that can arrest the situation currently threatening to kill the Tsavo ecosystem leading to catastrophic consequences to the livelihoods of communities living in Tsavo ecosystem and dispersal areas (TEDA) the economies of Kenya, the region and the world.

The Tsavo Forum is an attempt to create space or a platform where the various initiatives and efforts can be shared, discussed and mutually enriched with a view to identify opportunities of complimentary effort and, subsequently, create synergy for bigger impact. Secondly, the Tsavo Forum is intended to be a platform where practitioners, scientists and policy makers can interact with a view to enrich both practice and theory and, consequently, improve policy formulation and implementation. Thirdly, the Tsavo Forum is intended to ignite passion, deepen clarity on the issues at stake and initiate a process of developing a Marshal Plan to save the Tsavo ecosystem from imminent death. It is the belief of Tsavo Heritage Foundation (THF) that ONLY a large scale, massive action and movement anchored in communities of TEDA can turn around the current situation threatening to starve off the Tsavo ecosystem.

The Tsavo Forum is legally domiciled at THF but it is operationally an independent platform. There will be different types of membership to the Tsavo Forum ranging from long term, short term and even temporary categories.  Membership fees will be pegged on the membership category. Members will plan and implement activities of the Forum subject to approval by the Board of THF in line with the key functions of the Tsavo Forum as articulated above. The secretariat of THF will work with the members of the Forum on the basis of mutual understanding and complementarity.

The Tsavo Forum will initially be organized by the secretariat of THF until such time as the members take over the planning and implementation of the Forum activities. Similarly, fundraising for the Forum activities will initially be spearheaded by the secretariat of the THF but as the Forum gets organized it will spearhead the role of fundraising in collaboration with the secretariat of THF. The Board of THF is finally accountable for any funds raised to facilitate activities of the Forum.

The Tsavo Forum (or the secretariat of THF in the initial stages) will organize annual summit meetings on a selected topic lasting between four and six days. However, preparatory meetings leading up to the summit meeting may be held by stakeholders and members as they wish. Funds and organization for such preparatory meetings will be the responsibility of the members or stakeholders concerned. However, it will be desirable that the said members involve the secretariat of THF in such preparatory meetings.

The Tsavo Climate Challenge is a tree growing program of the Tsavo Heritage foundation, a charity duly registered in Kenya.
